Ms. Kalyani was 65-year-old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. With no family history, Kalyani never knew that there exists something called breast cancer till she was diagnosed with one. She has done mastectomy (one of her breasts was removed), and now all her three daughters have been asked to regularly examine their breasts.
With Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie’s preventive double mastectomy news, now the focus is again on breast cancer. In the 1980s, the incidence of breast cancer was 14 per one lakh population, but now it’s 30 per one lakh population, says K. Kalai Selvi, chief medical oncologist, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
Though Angelina’s mastectomy will create more awareness level, doctors feel it should not send wrong message to teenagers. Mutations in BRCA1 and another gene called BRCA2 might cause breast cancer.
