Keeping tab on blood pressure through genetics

Hypertension or high blood pressure is defined as a condition wherein the rate of blood flow within the arteries is elevated than the normal, resulting in serious health conditions.  Hypertension (commonly termed as high blood pressure) might also be due to the narrowing of blood vessel walls, due to the deposition of cholesterol.

The symptoms of hypertension are as follows:

  • Confusion
  • Buzzing of the ear
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Bleeding from the nose
  • Vision changes or blurring of vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chest Pain

A person can be considered as having an increased risk for hypertension if he/she carries specific genetic variations in  genes which regulate blood pressure, blood vessel wall tone, vasoconstriction, blood clotting, angiogenesis and fluid & electrolyte balance mainly through sodium reabsorption.
