Laugh and live longer

Laughter is the best medicine! Well can we rebuke that? As we grow up, we forget an important part of our feelings in this case an act – LAUGHING! Laughing can have a positive effect on our lives. Kids laugh and smile more openly than grownups and Elders seldom enjoy living in the moment. This may be due to the various pressures of life that come with age. But, laughing is a very beneficial act. Many researchers have shown that there are a number of health benefits when you laugh, including staying young.

When you laugh, there are many physiological changes that occur in your body. It sets off healthy physical changes in the body. From strengthening your immune system for boosting your energy, from reducing pain to protecting you from the effects of stress, laughter does it all! A good laughter can freshen up your mind and body. Yes! Laughter is a free medicine.

Benefits of laughter

  • A hearty laugh relaxes your body and relieves physical tension and stress. Your muscles will stay relaxed for more than 45 minutes after a good laugh.
  • Laughter can decrease stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies. Thus, you will have a stronger immune system.
  • Laughter triggers the release of endorphins. These neurotransmitters relieve pain temporarily and promote overall well-being. It also reduces the stress hormone cortisol.
  • Laughing helps in expanding the lungs, stretching the muscles in the body and stimulates homeostasis. It is like exercising the whole body.
  • Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow. It will prevent any cardiovascular problems.
  • Laughter helps you keep a positive and optimistic attitude through difficult circumstances.
  • Laughter helps you relax by reducing stress and increasing energy.
  • Laughter can also strengthen relationships by triggering positive feelings and friendly bonds.

How can you develop a sense of humor?

  • Your brain will not know the difference between a fake smile and a real smile. So try to smile and laugh as often as possible.
  • Watch funny films, TV shows and theatre dramas.
  • Spend more time with friends and family that make you feel happy. Surround yourself with happy and fun loving people.
  • Join a comedy club and laugh your heart out.
  • Read funny books.
